Aug. 28 zumbathon and Aug. 29 luau will benefit Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society and Relay For Life of the Alabama Gulf Coast want everyone to come out to a Zumbathon Dance Party Aug. 28 and a “pig out” luau on Aug. 29. Both events are fundraisers for the ACS and the public is greatly encouraged to attend one or both of these worthwhile events.

“We’re very excited about both of these fundraisers,” ACS Community Representative Rebekah McCarron said. “Sandy Davenport of Kaiser Realty is a certified Zumba instructor and she will lead the Zumbathon at the Gulf Shores United Methodist Church. Sandy led us in a Zumba session during our Relay this year, and we must have had 100 people dancing and having a great time. The event was so popular at Relay, we wanted to hold another one, and Sandy was gracious enough to volunteer to host.”

McCarron said there is a slight change in the way this Zumba party will be conducted. “This will be a ‘Glow Party’,” she said. “We’ll lower the lights and give everyone glow bracelets and encourage everyone to wear glow in the dark clothing. It should make an unbelievable sight.” Tickets for the Zumbathon are $10 for participants 16 and older and $3 for participants under 16. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and be held in the Building B auditorium of GSUMC. Tickets will be available at the door.

Allison Faircloth is the Executive Director of ACS in Southwest Alabama. She said she is equally excited about the luau set for Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at The Hangout in Gulf Shores. “The Hangout has been extremely supportive of our Relay down on the Gulf,” she said. “They’ve hosted Relay kickoff events and Survivor’s receptions for us. However, this is just a night for everyone to sit back, enjoy a good meal and listen to great music from the Adam Holt Band.”

The luau will include a silent auction according to Faircloth. “We’ll have auction items like University of Alabama football memorabilia signed by coach Saban and quarterback A.J. McCarron. The Hangout has also donated two tickets to the auction for Auburn’s season opener,” Faircloth said. Tickets may be purchased at Columbia Southern University, Meyer SH Enterprises and American Cancer Society office.

There will be a special menu provided, and participants will be able to pick an appetizer and a main course from that menu. Tickets are $25 per person, and the entertainment is included in the ticket price. “We thought these two events would go well together,” Faircloth said. “We’ll be there to exercise with you on Tuesday so you don’t have to feel guilty about going out on Wednesday to the luau.”
