Auditions for the premier of a new play, Magnolia or The Houe at the Head of the River, written and directed by local playwright C. Stefan Morrisette will be held December 3-4 at 6 p.m. at South Baldwin Community Theatre in Gulf Shores. Be prepared for a cold reading.
An elderly woman returns to her childhood home in Magnolia Springs, Alabama to celebrate her 90+ birthday under the watchful eye of her granddaughter. When she sees that the house she once loved is now a rundown bed and breakfast her past comes alive and she begins to relive all the highs and the lows of her life and the time spent at the house at the head of the river. She shares her stories of love, heart break, and all the lessons she learned along the way.
The play calls for five actors: Gran Tee – (60+, to play 90+) Sassy, independent, frail, stubborn, and loving; Caroline – (late 20s, 30s) Gran-Tee’s grand-daughter, a single mother from Chicago and going through a messy divorce; Jason – (30s) Friendly and sarcastic, the owner and operator of a run down bed & breakfast; Terrell – (pronounced TAIR-uh-l) – (late teens-20s, to play 16-early 20s) Gran Tee’s younger self. She’s mindful, hesitant, and has a hard time standing up for herself; Judd – (20s, to play late teens-20s) Handsome, strapping, romantic. Terrell’s love interest; Michelle – (late teens-20s, to play teens-20s) Tomboy, loyal, tough, Terrell’s best friend; Nathan – (20s, to play teens-20s) “A dweeb”, conservative, arrogant, high society, and insecure. Terrell’s betrothed; Mrs. Cowen – (pronounced KOH-w-ih-n) – (40s+) She sticks to the status quo. Terrell’s domineering mother; Bobby – (20s) Judd’s best friend and Michelle’s beau.
