Brandon Silvers will lead Troy in Mobile’s Dollar General Bowl
GSHS grad named All-Sunbelt Conferernce first team quarterback

Gulf Shores High grad Brandon Silvers will have major support from the stands when he leads the 9-3 Troy State Trojans against Ohio Universitsy (8-5) in the Dollar General Bowl on Dec. 23 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium at 7 p.m. It will be the second time this season that the redshirt junior has played in Mobile, just an hour’s drive from his hometown. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Now in his third year as Troy’s starting quarterback, Silvers earned first-team all-Sun Belt Conference honors this fall while leading the Trojans to nine wins. He threw for a career-high 395 yards to lead Troy to the win against South Alabama at Ladd-Peebles in October. A win in the bowl game will give Troy its first 10-win season since joining the FBS in 2001.
The Orange Beach native, whose parents both attended Foley High School, completed 269-of-419 passes for 2,945 yards with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season. He led the Sun Belt in passing yards, touchdown passes and total offense.
This will be Troy’s first bowl appearance since 2010, when they also played Ohio University, winning 48-21 in the New Orleans Bowl.
Silvers broke Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford’s NCAA freshman record as a redshirt freshman by completing just just over 70 percent of his passes.
