Flotilla 32 looking for some fresh blood

Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 32 meets at Ryan’s in Foley on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Flotilla 32 is looking for a few good men or women that would like to assist in helping the Coast Guard with boating safe education. There exist many opportunities to serve in this area. So, if you are interested, contact Jack Godwin at 251-979-7594.

Flotilla 32 also does courtesy safety examinations on recreational boats. The examiners do not write tickets they just check all the safety equipment and make recommendations for safe boating. If the boat meets the legal standards the owner will get a decal for the boat to show the boat has met the requirements. For more information contact Mary McClantoc. She can either check your boat or refer to another examiner. There are many other functions the Coast Guard in involved with so come join us and learn more about America’s Volunteer lifesavers.

Hot Trot for ARC 5K Run June 16 at LuLu’s

The LuLu’s Hot Trot for ARC 5K race/walk and 1-mile fun run will be held at LuLu’s at Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores on Saturday, June 16 beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event is conducted by the Robertsdale Rotary Club to benefit the Association for Retarded Citizens of Baldwin County. The entry fee is $20 before June 4 and $25 through race day. Day of race registration begins at 6:30 a.m., and packet-pickups will be available on June 15 from 2-6 p.m.

“This is the 30th year for this event which raises Money for the Association for Retarded Citizens of Baldwin County,’’ said director Dr. Keith Cooper. “Last year we had over 400, this year we are gearing up for 500 or more.’’

Reunion planned for P-Cola Youth Leadership Training Center

A reunion of those who attended the Pensacola Chapter Youth Leadership Training Center known as LTC in the 1970′s and ’80′s in planned for June 1-3, 2012 at the Blue Angel Park in Pensacola. Even though the camp was sponsored by the Pensacola Chapter of the American Red Cross, this reunion is not being sponsored by the Red Cross organization but rather by individuals. Forks & Corks fundraiser for Mary’s Shelter May 17 at Zen

You still have a chance to purchase tickets for “Corks and Forks”, benefit featuring good food and paired wine for Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast. The event will be held Thursday, May 17 at Zen Restaurant, Orange Beach. Zen owner Ginny Gilbert will provide a four-course gourmet dinner featuring salads, chicken, beef, dessert and wine to please the most discriminating taste.

Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast is a home for adult homeless pregnant women. It provides a safe, loving place to help women make important decisions for themselves and their babies. While at the shelter, the women can earn a GED and/or begin classes to further their education and work toward a career. After the baby is born and the mother has found work, she may enter the Transitional Housing program that subsidizes expenses for six months while she gets established in her new life. Adoption counseling is also available.

Pirates of Lost Treasure seek fishing tourney sponsors

The Perdido Key based Pirates of Lost Treasure are seeking program sponsors for their 7th Annual “Trolling for Booty” Fishing Tournament scheduled September 21-23. The krewe was established in 1992 and immediately initiated a charity called “Secret Santa” using money generated through various fund-raising activities. Thanks to continued efforts by Pirates volunteering their time and energy, Secret Santa has grown and now supports families, especially children, in need across Escambia County. This past year, the Pirates helped 41 kids and 54 needy families by providing $14,000 in assistance. The fishing tournament is the krewe’s major fundraiser. The krewe is a recognized non-profit 501C.
