Stephen Lee has co-written with several successful Nashville songwriters and performed at the Bluebird Café, Douglas Corner Café and the Broken Spoke. In 2006, Chris was selected to participate in the ASCAP Country Songwriting Workshop. He’s also attended many NSAI seminars and workshops as a member and participant. Chris has participated in the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival and has played many venues across the Southeast.

“So then whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all…”

The above quote from Galatians 6:10 is the only explanation necessary for why Perdido Bay United Methodist Church parishoners have decided to host the “Great Day of Service” on Sept. 26.

Volunteers will meet on the church lawn at 8 a.m. on Sept. 26 and depart to wherever there is need for help.

“It’s part of our reason for being here in terms of our mission,’’ said church Pastor Darren McClellan. “ It essentially involves the issue, ‘if we love them, how do we show them we love them.’’’

A church that has consistently emphasized community service ever since Rev. Jack deJarnette found space in a funeral home at the corner of Sorrento & Old Gulf Beach Hwy. back in 1987, Perdido Bay United Methodist Church’s congregation had no idea just how important a community service it would serve when they pledged the funds necessary to build the church’s Community Center.

The Perdido Bay Community Center was completed less than a year before Hurricane Ivan hit Perdido Key in the face with 115 mph winds and a 13 ft. storm surge in the early morning hours of Sept. 16, 2004.

In that storm’s aftermath, the Center became the community’s hub for everything from disaster assistance meetings to food and clothing distribution points.

“Certainly it is part of our DNA and consistent with the spirit of this place,’’ said Pastor McClellan. “I entered into such a great legacy of service. I want to continue to do it and be a part of it. But I take no credit for it.’’

The Rev. deJarnette, who has survived kidney and heart transplants before retiring, was able to move the church into its own Innerarity Point home in 1990.

The church’s long list of community outreach activities includes its annual trunk or treat halloween festival, breakfasts with Santa, and a highly successful mentoring program with Hallmark Elementary School.

The church is also extremely active with the United Methodist Core Relief Fund, which provides health and educational services to children all over the world.

Currently in the works is The Redemption Store, a consignment shop run by its volunteers

“We hope to meet as many needs as possible with the resources that we have. But it is not about us, it’s about community involvement to create a culture of community service,’’ Rev. McClellan said. “We welcome everyone to participate.’’

Anyone who could use a helping hand or knows someone who needs help with yard work, painting, trash disposal or an unfinished chore can contact the church.

No job is too small, and there is no fee. Call (850)-497-0000 to recommend projects or to register as a volunteer.

Next month’s International Coastal Cleanup will be celebrated on September 25 in Florida and Sept. 18 in Alabama, as around the globe, people do their part to protect our oceans by gathering, separating and documenting beachside trash.

Perdido Key volunteers will meet on Saturday morning, September 25, from 8 a.m. until noon at Perdido Key State Park West Recreation Area, 16087 Perdido Key Dr. (closest to Eden Condominiums), and then disperse to locations on Old River, in Big Lagoon State Park and along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Alabama Gulf Coast volunteers will meet at various places along its waters (see sidebar), and also work from 8 a.m. until noon. Volunteers are needed in both states, and everyone is welcome. Water and refreshments will be provided.

The Perdido Key Association has hosted the Clean-Up since 2003.

“A few months ago we weren’t at all sure how the oil spill was going to affect the beaches,’’ said PKA President Annie Griffin. “Many of us just couldn’t bear to set foot on them all summer. PKA even questioned the wisdom of promoting a beach cleanup when there has been thousands of man hours spent cleaning the beaches this summer.

“But then it became clear,’’ she added. “We have to have a Coastal Cleanup. This year is more important than ever. It’s time for our community to reclaim our beautiful Perdido Key beaches and inland waterways. They belong to us, not BP.’’

For more information about the Perdido Coastal Clean-Up, call Griffin at 492-1838 or email pkaemail@cox.net. To pre-register online or view last year’s Clean-Up report, visit www.oceanconservancy.org.

“There will be an Alabama Coastal Cleanup this year,’’ said organizers Amy King and Spencer Ryan on the ACC website. “However, for the safety of our volunteers, there will be modified cleanup zones if oil is present along the shoreline.’’

Organizers in both states emphasized that the Coastal Cleanup will not be an oil cleanup.

“The mission of the Alabama Coastal Cleanup is to provide an educational experience through the removal of marine debris from the shoreline of Alabama. The Cleanup will only focus on the removal of non-oiled marine debris and litter,’’ reported King and Ryan.

The Coastal Cleanup began in 1986, by one woman walking along the beach in Texas. Disgusted by the amount of trash she saw, she arranged a beach cleanup. Her singular vision is now a worldwide movement – last year, 500,000 volunteers from 108 countries picked up 7.4 million pounds of trash on a single day. It was the world’s largest volunteer effort for the ocean.

The report provides a roadmap for eliminating marine debris altogether by reducing it at the source, changing behaviors that cause it, and supporting better policy. The Cleanup offers people a chance to participate in their community and be a part of this global effort.

Trash is one of the most widespread pollution problems threatening our ocean and waterways – yet it’s entirely preventable. Marine debris is more than an eyesore. It is a threat to marine wildlife and ecosystems; and undermines tourism and economic activity, potentially threatening our food supply and human health. When we trash our ocean, we trash our life support system.

“We have to return to normal,’’ PKA’s Griffin said.

“We were helpless watching the oil spread, but we do have the power to make sure our shorelines, our dune system and our roadways are litter free.’’

The Perdidoi Key Association will host a public forum to outline progress on the Perdido Key Neighborhood Plan will be held on Monday, Sept. 13 at the Perdido Bay Community Center on Innerarity Point Rd. The open house type event starts at 6 p.m.

• What is the Perdido Key Neighborhood Plan?

Land Use Zoning first came to Escambia County in 1989. In view of the increasing demand for development on Perdido Key, the Perdido Key Advisory Committee was formed in 1997 to develop a plan for the future of Perdido Key.

• Who wrote it?

The original committee consisted of developers, Perdido Key property owners, Perdido Key residents, members of community associations, an environmentalist, an attorney, a realtor, a family resort destination for Perdido Key specialist and an investor. After two town hall and twelve Advisory Committee meetings, the Committee determined that in order to achieve the goals set forth specific objectives and policies in the following seven areas had to be implemented: (1) Land Use; (2) Hurricane Evacuation; (3)Transportation; (4) Signage; (5) Community Center; (6) Public Waterfront Access areas, and (7) Gateway Area.

The overall goal reached was to “encourage responsible, quality growth on the Key with a balanced mixture of residential and commercial development while maintaining its character as a family oriented beach community and preserving its natural amenities.”

In June 2002, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) directed Staff to update the 1997 Perdido Key Neighborhood Plan (PKNP). The BCC also directed Staff to analyze issues on Perdido Key related to anticipated population growth, economic development, natural resources, and preservation of public safety in its Update, as well as prepare an implementation and funding plan for outstanding objectives and policies contained in the 1997 PKNP. During this process, Staff noted six additional areas that will have an impact on the future of Perdido Key and should be also be implemented: (1) Natural Resource Protection; (2) Fire Rescue and Emergency Services; (3) Potable Water Service; (4) Sanitary Sewer Service; (5) Drainage; and (6) Economic Development. Some of the objectives established have been met and exceeded, some have not been reached.

• The 2002 update concluded the following:

“The County Staff and citizens of Perdido Key will meet semi-annually to review the neighborhood plan. The objective of these meetings will be to monitor progress of the implementation and adjust targets as necessary. Maintaining dialogue is paramount in developing win-win solutions.”

In April 2010, in response to a request from PKA that the Perdido Key Neighborhood Plan be updated, the BCC directed Staff to begin working on a current report.

• Why is the Perdido Key Neighborhood Plan important?

In order for Long Range Planning for the Key to reflect the concerns and desires of the community, public participation is extremely important. The PKNP semi-annual update process provides residents and property owners of the Key to provide input. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the goals reached and set about identifying new Objectives for the future.

Escambia County Staff from Development Services, Community & Environment Services, Public Safety and Public Works as well as representatives from Gulf Power, ECUA and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Dept. will provide information regarding current projects, answer questions and solicit public comments. Refreshments will be provided.

We invite everyone to stop by, learn what’s new, ask questions and provide your comments. If you cannot attend and want to submit written questions or concerns, please send them to pkaemail@cox.net.
