Lisa Christian adds afternoon gigs through Jan.

Fans of Lisa Christian (pictured) will not have to wait until dark, even with the approaching winter solstice, to hear their favorite entertainer, as the local favorite will be playing every Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. at the Bywater Bistro in Gulf Shores and every Sunday at 2 p.m. at Tacky Jacks in Gulf Shores through January. She is also scheduled for Wednesday bingo nights at Tacky Jacks in Orange Beach beginning at 6 p.m. through January.
Described by one music critic as “an unholy cross between Diana Krall and Ani DiFranco,” Lisa has spent the past decade playing her sometimes poignant and always clever songs throughout the Southeast while based on Pleasure Island.
Lisa picked up her first guitar at age 11 and was fronting a garage band in her native Philadelphia by the time she was 12. She spent her teens sneaking into local bars to play, and by her early 20s was working the downtown Philly and Jersey Shore club circuit to hone her soulful sound and unusual guitar style.
In 1995, she teamed with Lisa Durand in the duo Christian/Durand. The duo performed at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the Lillith Fair and opened for Bonnie Raitt, Sarah McLachlan, Queen Latifah, Tony Joe White and America. The duo was also a huge draw at the Flora-Bama, giving locals their first exposure to Lisa’s music.
In a time where so much music is artificially produced, Lisa is a throwback to a long-gone era of singers and musicians who got on stage and worked and sweated over every note, every night, without the crutch of backing tracks or pitch-correction devices. It’s just Lisa, in total control of her voice and instrument.
Her latest solo album, At Sunset, is available on her website.
Atlanta music mag In The Know probably described her best: “Lisa Christian is a long neglected gem who’s keeping R&B alive and positively kicking for anyone willing to listen.”
