Music Man & Company, is such a musical mainstay at American Legion Post 44 in Gulf Shores that Roger Beasley, the man behind the band, and his wife Elaine keep an RV at a park in Foley while they travel back and forth to South Baldwin from their Evergreen home.
“Roger and Elaine have stayed with Post 44 through good times and bad,’’ said Post 44’s Sherry Douglas. “They are loved by the locals and the snowbirds. He is a great singer, but also he plays the drums.’’
Music Man & Company plays at the Legion (6781 Hwy. 59, 251-948-6119) every Friday night at 7 p.m. and every Sunday at 5 p.m.
“Post 44 has been blessed with their music for so many years. They are known for closing on Sunday nights with a patriotic song,’’ Douglas added. “Everyone stands in a circle and each member holds a flag. It is an awesome thing to see.’’
Roger’s 40 year career as a musician started in his native Muscle Shoals. He was “sneaking off” to Tennessee to play drums in clubs with his uncle when he was 13 years old. That was the start of a professional career that took him to Nashville for session work and throughout the Southeast playing in bands with headliners or leading his own bands.
Roger said he can count at least 50 family members on his mother’s side who play music, and Frank Baker of Two of Hearts (another band that plays at Post 44) is a first cousin on his father’s side.
“Playing music has always been a natural thing for me to do,’’ Roger said. “Everybody in my family plays.’’
Roger and Elaine’s sets at the Legion are eclectic to say the least. He might play anything from the big band music that ruled the 1940’s to country, pop and rock hits from the past seven decades. He also sneaks an original tune into most sets.
“People seem to like them,’’ he said. “They are surprised when I tell them it’s one of my songs. But I basically play everything but rap. I especially like the ‘70’s. That was a good time for music. We also do a lot of line dancing. My wife gets up and does it with them.’’
Roger also puts on a first rate Elvis show a few times a year at the Legion, including a show planned on Sept. 18 (see story below).
