Native Plant Sale Oct. 7-9 under Fish River Bridge

The 24th Annual Native Plant Sale at Weeks Bay Reserve will be held Friday through Sunday, October 7-9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale is located just west of the Fish River Bridge on Highway 98 at Safe Harbor, directly across from the Weeks Bay Reserve Visitor Center, 11300 U.S. Highway 98, Fairhope. This sale will offer rare and hard-to-find species of native trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials, but will also include some non-native species which are well adapted to growing in our Gulf Coast enviornment. Experts, including several growers and the Baldwin County Master Gardeners, will be on hand to help with selections and to answer questions. Maureen Nation, Weeks Bay’s Volunteer Coordinator said. “Native plants are not invasive, and they support and attract our native fauna, such as butterflies and hummingbirds. Natives are also adapted to our area, and they require less intensive care in the landscape.”
Fall is the ideal time to plant trees on the Alabama coast. This sale will include both shade trees, including Live and Shumard Oaks, Sycamore and Bald Cypress as well as several spring flowering trees. Many varieties of citrus will also be offered.
Proceeds from the plant sale benefit environmental activities at the Weeks Bay National Esturine Research Reserve. For more information, call the Reserve at 251- 928-9792 or Nancy Gaines at 251-965-3751.
