Alabama Credit Union developed theSecret Meals For Hungry ChildrenSM program through partnerships with local food banks with the objective to address the issue of hunger facing our elementary schoolchildren.
Secret Meals fills the weekend gap that some children experience during the school year with vitamin-fortified and nutritional meals that are discretely slipped into the backpacks of as many hungry children as donations allow. The cost to ensure one child receives a food pack each Friday throughout the school year is $140 and Secret Meals expects to provide over 2,500 children with food packs this school year.
Currently, over twenty percent of Alabama’s children live below the poverty line; many of these children rely heavily on free and reduced breakfasts and lunches five days a week. However, the weekends create a nutritional gap leaving many children hungry when they return to school on Monday.
