39th Optimist Club Mullet Festival is Sept. 1 in Lillian

The 39th Annual Labor Day Mullet Festival hosted by the Optimist Club of Perdido Bay will be held Monday, Sept. 1 in Lillian,. The day begins with the presentation of the flag at 7:15 a.m., followed by the 5K Run/Walk at 7:30 a.m. at the Lillian Recreational Park, 33914 Widell Avenue. Register for the race at OptimistClubPB.org. Registration is also available from 6 to 7 a.m. on race day. There will be a Fun Run at 8 a.m. at the park.
The rest of the day will feature events at the Lillian Community Club, 34148 Widell Avenue. The famous Optimist breakfast will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Cost is $5, kids eight and younger eat free.
The Mullet Toss is on from 10 a.m. to noon with age level prizes awarded at 12:30 p.m. in the Main Hall. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes fish or BBQ plate with potato salad, baked beans, dessert and tea for $12 and once again, kids eight and younger eat free.
The Silent Auction, Déjà vu Market and Bake Sale will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Johnny B will provide music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day also includes a 50/50 drawing and a raffle for a king-size quilt.
The Optimist Club of Perdido Bay features service projects, programs and events for children in Baldwin County. Members work closely with the schools and other community organizations. The club sponsors Junior Optimist Clubs in local schools, provide a reading program with K-2nd Grade at Elberta Elementary School, conduct annual Essay and Oratorical Contests, provide lunch at the Baldwin County Special Olympics, award scholarships to graduating Seniors, host a Law Appreciation program for Baldwin County Law Officers, host a Fishing Rodeo, Trunk-R-Treat, Breakfast with Santa and the Annual Christmas Parade. In addition, multiple College and Trade School scholarships are provided.
