4th Annual Stockton Sawmill Days Nov. 12 at Live Oak Landing

Join us as we celebrate Stockton’s history and heritage as home to the first sawmill in the State of Alabama during the 4th Annual Stockton Sawmill Days
on Saturday, November 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Live Oak Landing, located on Hwy. 225 about a quarter mile north of I-65. Admission is $10 for adults, and $5 for children 12 to 5. Hosted by Stockton Heritage Assoc., the event is a fundraiser for the Stockton Heritage Museum.
Step back in time to the days when logging was done with draft animals. Watch as teams are hitched and logs are pulled and loaded ago. Witness log-rolling, pole climbing, cross-cut sawing, boom walking and other feats performed by professional lumberjacks.
Stroll through living history demonstrations – basket making, spinning, weaving, quilting, blacksmithing, syrup making, gristmill, Indian camp, Enjoy watching and tasting foods cooked in cast iron pots, see and learn about piney wood oxen & sheep common years ago. Portable sawmills will cut lumber, circular saw blades will be sharpened. Children can help churn butter, shell corn, and hunt for treasure in sawdust pile.
Set up your lawn chair and tap your foot to the music performed throughout the day by various groups. Enter our buck dancing contest: 1st place is $100, 2nd place is $50, and 3rd is $25. No charge to enter the contest. Two categories: 16 and up; and 15 and under.
Visit over 50 exhibits and stroll under moss draped Live Oaks through booths of carefully selected folk art. See how far the harvesting of timber has come as you compare logging with draft animals to the modern logging equipment used today.
= Come early and enjoy “sawmill” biscuits & tomato gravy, or “flap-jacks” with sorghum syrup. Later on be drawn by the aroma of fresh fried catfish, cheese grits, turnip greens, corn bread, BBQ, roasted corn-on-the-cob, cracklings, funnel cakes, and buttermilk pie.
