Weather Cuts 12th Annual Ballyhoo Short After Record Breaking Crowd On Saturday

The 12th Annual Ballyhoo on the shores of Lake Shelby at Gulf State Park attracted a record crowd on March 7, before a severe overnight storm blew down artist tents and left huge puddles throughout the grounds well into its scheduled final day.
With the threat of more heavy rain and pools of water throughout the festival site, the appropriate decision was made to cancel the second day and allow artists to get packed up and save the rest of their day, said Paula Powell, director of Ballyhoo.
Sunday’s banjo & fiddle competition still went on at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores. This year’s competition was in honor the late Winky Hinks, the event founder, whose presence was was felt by everyone there.
Debi Parnell of Bay Minette won the Alabama Beaches award. Curtis Whitman of Tampa won the Coastal Alabama Chamber award. Georgie Lehoop of Saint Clair, Pennsylvania won the City of Gulf Shores award, and Astou Dioum of New York City won the the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance award.
