Butterfly walks at Bon Secour Refuge start on Oct. 19

Join Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge volunteer Homer Singleton, as he leads participants along the refuge’s Gator Lake Trail searching for and talking about the fascinating life cycle of one of the world’s most beautiful butterflies. Monarch butterfly walks will be held at 9 a.m. on the following dates: Wednesday, October 19; Friday, October 21; Wednesday, October 26; Friday, October 28; Wednesday, November 2; Friday, November 4; and Wednesday, November 9.
During the walk, Homer will introduce you to the butterflies which pass through this area, their habitats and their life cycles. Participants will also be asked to help catch monarchs so that they can receive tags that will allow scientists to track their migration.
The walks will start at the Gator Lake trailhead, located off of Ft. Morgan Rd. in Gulf Shores and just off of Mobile Street. Walks typically last around three hours and participants should come prepared to walk over two miles, in the soft sand, with minimal shade. Water and bug spray are highly suggested. The walks will be limited to 12 participants. Reservations can be made by calling 251-540-7720.
