Foley to improve drainage on U.S. 98

Foley City Council approved the capital project to improve drainage in the area between Hickory Street and Cedar Street to improve drainage along an area of U.S. 98 that has flooded during storms in recent years.
The project will include replacing a culvert with a larger concrete drainage pipe in the area south of Magnolia Circle, and most of the work will be done by city Street Dept. crews.
The property in the area was once a potato field, but is now developed.
The Alabama Department of Transportation will require that a larger drainage pipe be placed at the site where the city’s parcel connects with the highway.
“This will straighten out some of the drainage and improve it and make it more resilient over here,” Hellmich said. “We had some flooding in Hurricane Sally there. Part of it was because of debris blocking the pipe. This will help the whole area.”
