G.S. pedestrian bridge will open in Nov. of 2026

“This has been a long time coming,’’ said Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft after City Council approved a $24.3 million contract with Harrison Construction Company of Tuscaloosa to build a pedestrian bridge across the Intracoastal Canal just east of the W.C. Holmes Memorial Hwy. 59 bridge. The city will use a $7.9 million federal BUILD to pay for part of the project.
The 75 ft. high pre-fabricated bridge is scheduled for completion in late November of 2026.
The city’s original design was a steel structure with spiraling staircases at each end. But the lowest bid for that design was almost twice as much as the project budget.
Towers on each end of the bridge will include elevators large enough to accommodate at least three bicyclists and 75 step stairwells. Plazas will surround each tower, and the project also includes parking on both sides.
The pedestrian bridge will replace the narrow pedestrian lane on the Hwy. 59 Bridge that will be eliminated as part of the widening of Hwy. 59 from Fort Morgan Rd to Cypress Bend Dr.
