GSHS art teacher visits Coach Krzyzewski at Duke

Austin Boyd, as part of a spontaneous realism painting technique class he teaches at Gulf Shores High School, paints a picture of a celebrity each year and sends it to that person in hopes of getting a response. Clemson Football Coach Dabo Swinney and President Trump are among those who responded.
But this year’s celebrity, Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski personally called to thank Boyd and his students for the honor and invited the Boyd family to visit the campus this summer and the family took him up on the offer.
“We met Coach K this past Friday and what a great time we had,’’ Boyd said. “He is just as nice, honorable, funny and respectable as Dabo Swinney. We spent about 15-20 minutes in his office lounge talking and then he gave us a mini-tour of Cameron Indoor stadium.’’
Boyd said his family was able to meet many Duke players past and current and received VIP treatment from the Duke basketball staff throughout their visit.
“I invited Coach and his family down for a nice beach weekend, so we will see if he takes me up on it,’’ he said “He also said that he was really honored to be chosen as a subject of one of my paintings and to join the list. He and his staff love the portrait. He had some really comical comments about himself and the portrait.’’
Boyd presented Coach K a student signed art class photo and a t-shirt, and he hopes to return to Raliegh for a hoop game next season.
