Gulf Coast Rep offers dance/acting classes at its Foley theater
The Gulf Coast Rep is now offering acting and dance classes at its theater located at OWA Downtown in Foley (next door to Starbucks) in addition to an ongoing series of plays.
Recently formed to advance theatre as an art form in South Baldwin County, it fosters a passionate spirit and eclectic, artist-driven approach to creative work that consist of new, original work in its theater productions and class offerings.
Gulf Coast Rep founder and artistic director Darren Butler will teach Gulf Coast Rep’s acting classes where students will learn acting techniques for stage and film. Students will learn about auditioning, script analysis, self-taping, mime and improv. Classes will be separated into 3rd-6th and 7th-12th grade students.
Dance classes at the theater will include instruction in different genres such as musical theatre, contemporary, ballet, and hip hop from Cadence Baker, who has many years of performing arts experience in dance, theatre and songwriting. Baker placed in Top 20 on ABC’s American Idol. Class levels are for 2nd-6th grade and 7th-12th grade students.
Tuition is $80 per month or $25 per class and students will get a chance to perform in a variety night where different acts are performed for the public – like a talent show. More info: gulfcoastrep.com or call 646-974-1250 or 251-364-4050.
“We are committed to being a permanent safe harbor for surprising work, offering a glimpse of the new and the next in American theatre,’’ said Darren Butler. “We will create an alliance of arts organizations in our community and surrounding areas to cultivate the arts in a positive, forward-thinking environment.’’
The Gulf Coast Rep also hopes to provide educational programming for elementary, junior high, and high schools by touring a professional troupe to schools. This aspect of the organization is still in development, but it hopes to launch the first tour of schools during the 2025-26 school term. Programming will range from classic children’s literature, titles on school reading lists to one-person shows of famous historical men and women.
