It’s now official: Akin accepts offer to be Gulf Shores’ first school superintendent

The City of Gulf Shores announced on its facebook page that Dr. Matt Akin has agreed to become the first superintendent of Gulf Shores City Schools effective June 1. Akin will see the city through a transition year before the city takes over operation of its schools in August of 2019. Akin was the only candidate who interviewed for the job. “Help us welcome Dr. Akin and his wife Sandra to our community. #DolphinProud” read the post.
An educator for over twenty-five years, Akin was superintendent of Piedmont City Schools from June, 2003 to March, 2017 and began serving as Superintendent of Huntsville City Schools in March, 2017. Akin has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Samford University, a Master of Arts degree in Administration Certification, and a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Alabama.
