As the club’s official PR Dude, Dayre Lias, pu it: “Kids need Kiwanis, and Kiwanis needs energetic new members. Although we have some great speakers at our meetings, we are a hands-on organization dedicated to improving children’s lives in our community.’’
The Kiwanis Club of Big Lagoon, whose motto is “Improving the world and our community, one child at a time,’’ is in the midst of a club membership drive.
“Most people didn’t join because they saw a website or a flyer. They joined because someone invited them,’’ said Lias, who was invited to a meeting by a neighbor. “That seems to be how Kiwanis works — one invitation at a time.
“Members talk about reaching a point in life where they wanted to do something meaningful for their community, especially for kids. But what really keeps people here seems to be two things: the work and the people. Helping kids gives us purpose, and the friendships and camaraderie make it fun,’’ he added.
Founded in 1915 in Detroit, Kiwanis International has grown to become a worldwide service club with over 592,820 members in more than 80 nations. Its clubs raise over $100 million annually for community service projects and contribute over 18.5 million volunteer hours each year.’’ For more info about the club, visit BigLagoonKiwanis or call 901-734-1055.
