Life – Times of Doc Holliday topic of May 11 Foley lecture

The Life and Times of Doc Holliday will be the topic of the featured lecture at the May 11 Baldwin County Genealogical Society
meeting on May 11 at 10 a.m. at the Foley Public Library, located at 319 E. Laurel Ave. in Foley.
Crestview dentist Dr. Richard Thomas (pictured), an expert on Doc Holliday and a collector of memorabilia connected to him, will speak. Expect an enthusiastic presentation with an opportunity to see pieces from Dr. Thomas’ extensive collection.
Meetings are free and open to the public. Following the presentation, guests are invited to join society members for light refreshments and discussion of research tips and brick walls.
A controversial figure of the Old West, Dr. John Henry Holliday – better known as “Doc Holliday – began his life in Georgia in 1851. He trained as a dentist before heading to the West. He suffered personally and professionally because of tuberculosis, and often supported himself as a gambler and dealer at card tables before the disease claimed his life.
Holliday is perhaps best remembered for a brief moment that made history. He was one of the gunmen at the O.K. Corral shootout in Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. The gunfight lasted less than a minute but it’s still remembered and frequently re-enacted more than 130 years later. More info: baldwingenealogy.org or facebook.
