May 7 is Bike or Walk To School Day at Baldwin County schools

On May 7, schools in Baldwin County are lacing up for a celebration of healthy and safe transportation while bringing communities together through every step. The Baldwin County Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Coalition, which includes all three public school systems, is once again leading the charge for the Annual Spring Walk Or Bike To School Day.
The May 7 event promotes healthier lifestyles and safer communities while reducing traffic and supporting the environment. Whether you’re a student, parent, teacher, or community member, the Annual Spring Walk is an easy and meaningful way to be part of an event that supports well-being and connected neighborhoods. It’s a short and simple journey, schools meet at a designated spot and walk a mile or less to their school together. Whether you walk, roll, or cheer from the sidelines, you’ll be making an impact on your community.
Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft and Gulf Shores City Council officially proclaimed May 2025 as Bike Month, continuing the city’s commitment to promoting cycling and active lifestyles. The proclamation kicks off a month-long celebration with several activities aimed at encouraging residents of all ages to embrace cycling. As a Silver-Level Bicycle Friendly Community, Gulf Shores is dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cycling culture that enhances the quality of life for all its residents.
“This is an opportunity for us, the City of Gulf Shores, to further invest in our residents, both adults and children, by promoting a healthy lifestyle as we encourage a more active bicycling community,” said city representative Andy Bauer.
Get ready to join your neighbors for a community-wide celebration of cycling. This May 4 event invites residents of all ages and skill levels to explore Gulf Shores on two wheels. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just dusting off your bike for the first time this year, National Ride-a-Bike Day is the perfect opportunity to experience the joy of cycling. Participants are encouraged to explore the city’s extensive network of bike paths and trails throughout the day.
Students and parents can participate in supervised group rides to school on May 7 from two convenient meeting locations in Gulf Shores: Johnnie Sims Park (Kids Park Playground area) at 7:15 a.m. and Meyer Park at 7:30 a.m. The Gulf Shores Police Department will escort riders to ensure safety along the routes. After-school return rides will also be organized. All participants must wear helmets.
Gulf Shores residents are encouraged to leave their cars at home and bike to work during the May12-18 National Bike Week. The highlight of the week is National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 16, when everyone is especially encouraged to join the cycling community for their morning commute. Whether you’re a first-time rider or an experienced cyclist, this week offers a great opportunity to try cycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly way to commute.
The City of Gulf Shores invites all residents to participate in these Bike Month activities and explore the benefits of cycling in our coastal community. In addition to these events, the Gulf Shores Recreation Department will be holding a special bike challenge called “Do the Ride Thing!” during May. This is a free four-week outdoor bike challenge with weekly mileage goals. For more information about biking in Gulf Shores, visit gulfshoresAL.gov/bike.
