O.B. Sportfishing Club Casting For A Cure raises $10K for charity Kids
only tourney benefactor Children’s Alabama “very valuable to our state” By Bethany White The Orange Beach Sportfishing Club (OBSFC) hosted the first annual kids only fishing tournament on May 31, 2025. Casting for a Cure was created to get kids involved in fishing as well as raise money for Children’s of Alabama. It was a fun filled family event where kids ages 3-15 years old went fishing with a friend or family member. At the end of the day, their catch was brought to Bear Point Harbor to weigh in. OSO provided refreshments while each family anxiously awaited the scores. Fifty five kids participated in this event. Each age group was awarded prizes for the 1st , 2nd, and 3rd place heaviest fish and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place longest fish. There was one overall winner for largest pinfish and one for the smallest fish. Twenty winners in all but each kid had a terrific time fishing. Overall, the fishing tournament raised $10,000 for Children’s of Alabama. Children’s of Alabama is located in Birmingham and specializes in childhood cancer and prevention. I developed childhood cancer at the age of one year old and went to this hospital for treatment and followup care for 20 years. It is not too often that you find someone that doesn’t know a child that this facility has touched. Children’s of Alabama is very valuable to our state. You don’t fully understand its impact until you have been there and witnessed the staff, care, and technology. I have always wanted to give back and I appreciate the Orange Beach Sportfishing Club for the opportunity. On behalf of the Orange Beach Sportfishing Club, I would like to thank the community for their wonderful support as well as the volunteers that made this happen. We cannot wait till next year.
