Perdido Pass seawall repairs have started

Repairs to the west side of the Perdido Pass Seawall Park have started. The west side of the park and parking lot will be fenced during the 35-40 day project. Following the completion of that section, fencing will be moved to the north side to complete repairs, as well as expand and improve the park area. The project, of which the repair portion is a FEMA project, was awarded by the City Council to MD Thomas Construction, LLC for $695,597.05.
The Perdido Pass seawall and fishing area fall under the responsibility of the Alabama Department of Transportation, but it was closed in 2012 because it was compromised and declared unsafe. Tired of the unsightly fence and closure of one of the city’s prized amenities, the City Council began looking for ways to get the park back open so fishermen and sightseers could enjoy one of the most unique places in Alabama.
With the state’s permission, Orange Beach made more than $200,000 in improvements in the area by shoring up the worst spots, and adding landscaping that included palm trees, enhanced lighting, a boardwalk and benches. The popular park reopened in 2017.
In addition to destroying most of the boardwalks at pass park in September 2020, Hurricane Sally damaged foundations and utility lines there, making a majority of the park unsafe. The rebuild will include a Phase 3 extension of the boardwalk north of the bridge as well as parking improvements.
