Red Snapper season continues weekends in Alabama
The Alabama red snapper season will remain open to recreational anglers every weekend until the private angler quota for the state is met. The Alabama private angler quota for 2025 is set by NOAA Fisheries and is anticipated to be 664,552 pounds.
Weekends open to red snapper harvest are defined as 12:01 a.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday. The daily bag limit will be two red snapper per person, per day with a minimum size limit of 16 inches total length.
The Florida red snapper is open daily through July 31. Florida has also scheduled a fall season from September 1-14, and weekends only (Friday – Sunday) for the remainder of the year.
Last fall, MRD conducted a series of public meetings to gain input from the public on the red snapper season in Alabama. The consensus from that public input was overwhelmingly positive for keeping the snapper season open seven days a week from Memorial Day weekend through the end of June, and if quota remains return to the weekend only season beginning with the Fourth of July weekend until the quota is harvested.
In Florida, special holiday opportunities will occur on Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day for recreational anglers fishing from a private vessel in Florida Gulf state and federal waters. For-hire charter operators without a federal reef fish permit may also participate but are limited to fishing in Florida Gulf state waters only.
The 126-day Florida red snapper recreational season is the longest season since Florida assumed management of Gulf red snapper, and it offers anglers more opportunities to fish over major holidays.
