SALT adds 245 acres near Scenic Hwy. 98 for preservation

The South Alabama Land Trust (SALT), a regional land conservation nonprofit, closed out 2023 on a high note by adding another 245 acres to its portfolio of conservation land. SALT received a donation of 65 acres in treasured Titi Swamp located on Scenic Highway 98 in Fairhope. The property, donated by Pitman Properties LLC, consists of forested wetlands that are home to many coastal bird and animal species. Pamela Pitman Turner and her sister Pris Pitman Milling, both of Pitman Properties, were inspired to donate their land out of respect for the environment. According to Pamela, “Growth in our Utopia is inevitable. As respectful stewards of our gifts, we are called to become educated and involved to maintain a healthy environment for all of God’s creation.”
SALT also obtained a conservation easement on 180 acres of land near Elsanor from an anonymous donor. The land is a haven for gopher tortoises, snakes, birds, deer and beavers.

It also includes rare plant species, such as many-flower beardtongue. SALT has been conserving land in South Alabama since it was founded in 1990. To date, SALT has protected over 11,000 acres of land.
