Sperm whale stranded in Mobile Bay near Montrose

The Dauphin Island Sea Alabama Marine Mammal Stranding Network team has had to euthanize a stranded sperm whale found in Mobile Bay on Nov. 19 in Montrose near Steadman’s Landing Park. It was the first documented case of a stranded sperm whale in Alabama waters. The animal moved into deeper water and restranded three times while trying to swim towards open sea while the stranding team monitored the whale from vessels.
Dr. Ruth Carmichael with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Marine Mammal Research Program said euthanizing the animal was the best option, according to the DISL facebook page.
“This animal who was suffering and unable to swim and survive any longer in the wild,” Dr. Carmichael said. A necropsy will be performed on the sperm whale carcass.
