Tickets are now on sale for the Doobie Brothers 50th Anniversary Tour t The Wharf Amphitheater on July 23. Part of the C Spire Concert Series, the two-and-a-half hour concert will include around 30 songs from the band’s 15 studio albums.
Those tracks will include songs from the 1972 breakout album “Toulouse” and 1973 follow-up “The Captain and Me.” Rockers like “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman,” “China Grove,” “Long Train Runnin” and the band’s cover of the Arthur Reid classic “Jesus Is Just Alright.”
Founding member and main songwriter Tom Johnston, the band’s lead guitarist, stepped down as lead vocalist in the mid-1970s due to health issues. But on this tour, he is singing more songs than any other Doobie.
In 1975, keyboardist and vocalist Michael McDonald joined the band, and he will also be on stage adding his soulful sound to many of the songs he wrote, including 1978’s “What a Fool Believes,” a co-write with Kenny Loggins. The sax player in the nine musician band, Marc Russo, has also been garnering rave reviews for his solos, particularly on “You Belong to Me.”
The Doobie Brothers released “Liberté” in 2020. The album’s title is likely a reference to their early days performing for the Hells Angels at Chateau Liberte. The band has been plahing two tracks, “Don’t Ya Mess With Me” and “Better Days” from this album. The band has been playng a three song encore: “Black Water,” “Takin’ It to the Streets” and “Listen to the Music.”
