He took over the A&M program in 1982 after signing a contract for $1.6 million over five years, a record deal for a college football coach at the time. He won the Southwest Conference three times and had a 52-28-1 record over six years with the Aggies. After a 7-5 season in 1988 and a two-year NCAA probation, Sherrill resigned.
