Although it was an away game for Troy University quarterback Brandon Silvers, the Gulf Shores High grad had plenty of supporters (above) cheering him on during Troy’s 28-21 win against South Alabama at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Oct. 20. A large contingent of friends and family made the 60 mile trip to tailgate and support the Orange Beach native and Gulf Shores High grad. The group included the roommate of the record setting QB’s uncle, Carey Christensen, who quarterbacked the Trojans to the 1984 Division II national championship and an RV full of Foley residents who went to school with Brandon’s parents, Jeff and Roz Ann Silvers. As a redshirt freshman, Silvers set an NCAA freshman record with a completion percentage of 70.5 (191 of 271). He threw for 2,387 yards and 20 touchdowns last season while completing 61.2 percent of his passes, and this fall he has taken another step forward leading Troy to a 6-1 record, good enough for first place in the Sun Belt Conference. The Orange Beach resident also played well in Troy’s only defeat, a nationally televised 30-24 defeat at No. 3 Clemson in Week 2. A 3-star recruit who was recruited by most SEC schools and had offers from just about every team in the Sunbelt Conference, including South, Silvers decided to continue a family legacy when he selected to continue his football career at Troy. In addition to his uncle, his athletic mother attended Troy. “I was going up to Troy all through high school, and they had good coaches,’’ Brandon said after his record breaking freshman season. “I thought about going to South (Alabama), but they wanted me to commit early, and I wanted to wait until after my senior season to see what would happen.’’ A sport & fitness management major, Brandon was named to the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Newcomer Team. He also set a Troy record for consecutive passes to open a career without an interception. His grandfather, William Silvers, was Orange Beach’s first public works director. The road entering the Orange Beach Sportsplex is named after him. Brandon’s father, Jeff Silvers, is the Orange Beach Mayor pro tem. He and Brandon’s mom, Roz Ann, knew each other at Foley High, but they didn’t start dating until Jeff ran into Roz Ann a few years later at the old L.A. Pub & Grub in Gulf Shores. Brandon’s  younger brother Chase, a Gulf Shores High junior (he plays basketball and baseball) was also in Mobile cheering on his brother.
