Event is major fundraiser for Makos Academics Arts Athletics Club

By Jeanne Fitzgibbons
The Orange Beach Seafood Festival, scheduled on Saturday, February 29 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Main Street at The Wharf, off Canal Rd., continues to grow with more food, more arts, more cars and more entertainment. The 2019 event saw a record crowd and organizers are gearing up for the same this year. The festival, now in its 28th year is one of the major fundraising events of the newly formed Makos Academics Arts Athletics Club. All revenues from the event will be used at Orange Beach schools to support activities that the county doesn’t fund. This new focus is bringing in parents, students and citizens all with the goal of giving our children the very best.
The Wharf location offers the perfect venue for the festival. Unlimited parking and access, space for a large Car Show and a great area for the Kids Zone have meant the festival can offer more for visitors to enjoy. This year there will be 130 Artists; an expanded Car Show on the west side of the Wharf complex; fifteen food booths offering seafood and other specialties and entertainment from two stages. The Paws on Parade event that was added last year will be back, sponsored by Safe Harbor Animal Coalition. In addition, the coalition will be on site will fur babies to adopt. We encourage our pet owners to dress their pets in their finest outfits and come out and participate in the parade.
Artists will be selling an assortment of wares including jewelry, pottery, glass art, metal items, candles, textile arts, canvas & wooden furniture, and so much more. The car show has been growing each year. Cars can sign up the morning of the event but are encouraged to register before the event. All cars must be in place by 9:30 am. The Kids Zone will feature a Mega Slide, Mechanical Bull & Surfboard, and various games. Also on hand will be the Orange Beach Wildlife Center, Alligator Alley and other entertainment.
Many of the changes and upgrades for this year’s event are due to partnerships with area businesses. Many thanks to The Wharf, Pepsi, Sunbelt Rentals, Beebe’s Pest Control, Brett/Robinson, Encore Rehabilitation, Perdido Beach Resort, USSSA, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach Tourism and the City of Orange Beach.
There is no admission charge to the event and plenty of parking. There will be a $2 per car donation collected that is going directly to our schools. Come out and help our schools grow and expand.
