Carry The Load rally/walk to honor vets May 23 at ‘Bama

For the second consecutive year, Carry The Load, a non-profit created with a mission to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day, will be traveling through Orange Beach before stopping at the Flora-Bama for a memorial walk and rally. Come out and honor America’s heroes at 6:30 p.m. on May 23 by participating in a three mile honor walk on the beach beginning and ending at the Flora-Bama. A rally in the ‘Bama Big Tent will follow at 7:30 p.m. with guest speakers and a patriotic band playing on stage.
Founded by Veteran U.S. Navy SEALs, Clint Bruce and Stephen Holley, Carry the Load started as a mission to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day. Today, it has grown to include more than just our military heroes and more than just the one holiday. Carry The Load works to bring all Americans together to participate in honoring our nation’s heroes every day. For more info about the family friendly event, visit carrytheload.org.
The event recognizes the sacrifices of our heroes (veterans, police, first responders and their families) and consists of five national relays traveling on foot in 3-5 miles segments. Its 32-day, 48 state, 20,000-mile National Relay that includes 100 rallies nationwide. Members travel one of five routes throughout the country with all the relays ending in Dallas on Memorial Day.
“We die two times once when our heart stops and once when our name is last spoken,” said Matthew Eveland. “The families of those that we’re honoring speak as if they’re still here. And through the years, I’ve kind of been diluted with what Memorial Day really is, is like barbecues and drinking and stuff. But when we sit with those families and kind of share that pain with them, and they speak like they’re still here and how much they miss them and it brings it home for us.”
Carry the Line has raised $2.25 million since the start of May, and more than 90 percent of all donations goes towards the group’s nonprofit partners.
