2020’s Wreaths Across America At Barrancas Cemetery The Best Ever
The sponsoring Kiwanis Club of Big Lagoon reported in its newsletter that “against all odds, Wreaths Across America at Barrancas National Cemetery was the best ever, with over 19,000 wreaths placed over a four day period thanks to the herculean effort of the club’s event committee led by Martin Haygood and many other volunteers from the Pensacola. Five semi-trucks with a record 25,000 holiday wreaths arrived at NAS Pensacola. And they were placed on the veterans’ graves Dec. 17-20, with restrictions due to Covid-19 significantly changing how and when the wreaths were placed. Wreaths Across America was held in conjunction with Arlington National Cemetery and 1600 other locations worldwide.
In this challenging year, it was indeed herculean for the club to reverently remember and honor veterans resting at Barrancas and teach future generations about the sacrifices they made. The event was made possible by the generosity of local businesses and individuals that include: Quadruple Diamond Sponsor Pen Air Federal Credit Union; Double Diamond Sponsors – Ascend Performance Materials; Diamond Sponsor Regions Bank; Double Platinum Sponsor Trushell Living Trust – William Trushell; Platinum Sponsors Brown Helicopter Inc, Carol Shaefer and Marion E. Books; Gold Sponsors Navy Federal Credit Union, Central Credit Union of Florida, Post 47 AMVET and Post 292 AMVET, Pensacola Beach Elks Lodge 497, Jewelers Trade Shop, Gary and Nancy Craig, National Standard Parts Associates, The Mitchell Company, Bernard L. Mostoller, COX Communications, Coast Guard Friends and Family, and Holley Navarre Medical Clinic – Dr Joel Rudman MD.
