Phase I of CoastAL should be open by end of September

Phase I of the beachfront CoastAL development in Orange Beach, which includes a retail shop and outdoor bar, should be open by the end of September, according to owner John McInnis of Orange Beach Land Company.
In December of 2020, Orange Beach City Council voted unanimously to allow the restaurant on the eastern half of the beachfront property, which is near the main intersection in town at Hwy. 61 and Perdido Beach Blvd. The city agreed to pay for 400 feet of the total 800 feet fronting the Gulf. The project replaces an earlier plan to construct two high-rise condominium towers on the site. Mayor Tony Kennon said it had been a goal of the city to own some beachfront property
“This property was the largest piece of high-density condo land left on the Alabama Coast,” said McInnis. “While not in the best interest of the developers financially, it was in the best interest of the community and the public.”
Phase II will include full public beach access and Phase III will be the indoor and outdoor restaurant expected to open in the spring of 2023.
The parking lot for Orange Beach residents will include a walkover, restroom facilities, a lifeguard station, and storage and safe rooms for city use.
The property gives Orange Beach, which has been holding most of its community events at The Wharf, a spectacular spit of land directly on the Gulf that will be another community hub for future gatherings and events, as well as a residents’ beach access parking lot.
In addition to the three main buildings, the project includes a landmark tower on axis with Highway 161. Operable glass garage doors will allow all the buildings to capture Gulf breezes, and the plan is for every seat and space in the restaurants to have a view of the beach and Gulf of Mexico.
