South Baldwin Community Theatre hosts July 15-17 fest
2nd End of The Road Festival celebrates 9 new short plays

First-run plays are rare on the Gulf Coast. But the South Baldwin Community Theatre is changing that by offering an entire weekend of new short plays during the July 15-17 End of the Road New Play Festival and Beach Party at the South Baldwin Community Theater in Gulf Shores. The fest will feature nine new plays by playwrights from all over the nation.
“We’re very excited about this program. It’s in its second year and was very well received last year,” said (pictured) Laura Pfizenmayer, director for the event.
This type of theatrical festival is new to the Gulf Coast. The nine plays were selected from over one hundred submissions from across the country. “The plays are diverse with six comedies and three dramatic works,’’ Pfizenmayer said. “Each one represents a broad spectrum of theater. We’re excited.”
The festival format models other popular festivals such as The Last Frontier Theatre Conference and the Great Plains Theatre Conference. “We have a wonderful theater here and an amazing facility. They are very supportive of new work and that’s wonderful,” Pfizenmayer said. The SBCT hopes this kind of event may inspire members of the community to get involved in the theater. Winner of the 2015 People’s Choice Award was Gulf Shores resident Dave Perry.
The plays are all 10 to 15-minutes long and performed by local actors with local directors. The performances are staged readings of the plays with minimal props and stage production – a kind of stripped down theater approach. These kinds of performances have been well-received in other markets because it allows for the audience to meet and talk with the writers before and after the show. A beach party-style reception will be held prior to each performance.
Performances will be July 15 and 16 with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the performance at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, July 17 the performance will be at 2 p.m., with a closing reception and awards presentation to follow.
