Addison Smith earns GSGC scholarship

The Gulf Shores Garden Club has named 2021 Gulf Shores High School grad Addison Smith the recipient of its annual $1,000 scholarship.
To qualify, a GSHS grad or student must major in a field related to horticulture. Smith will study biology with a concentration in environmental science at the University of South Alabama next fall. Her goal is to work in conservation as a way of giving back to her community.
“Any career that has to with the environment requires a lot of knowledge and care. By being able to go to college, I will be able to give back later when I begin this (environmental preservation) work,’’ she said.
Smith added that she hopes to begin working in the field even before she graduates.
“With my knowledge of the area and the local ecosystem, I’ll be able to work with conservation in ways many others can’t,’’ she said.
The Gulf Shores Garden Club provides members with opportunities to gain new ideas in gardening, floral arrangement and landscaping. Members place a premium on having fun and community service. Besides raising funds for a host of local charities, club members participate in local civic projects such as Coastal Clean-up and the Gulf Shores Christmas Celebration.
Its primary fundraiser is an annual floral seminar held the first Wednesday of February. The next seminar is Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores.
Club meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month September through May at the Gulf Shores Adult Activity Center, 260 Clubhouse Dr. Refreshments and social time begins at 9:15 a.m., the program is presented at 9:45 am., with a business meeting following the program.
