Free Thursday evening concerts continue at Gulf Place
Ever More Nest, Early James, FBISF writers slated to play
The City of Gulf Shores will continue present free Sunset Series concerts on three more Thursday evenings this month from the pavilion at the Town Green at Gulf Place (101 Gulf Shores Pkwy.) from 6-8 p.m.
Bring family, friends and lawn chairs and enjoy a white-sand beach sunset. The Coastal Albama Chamber will be selling dicount priced beverages and food trucks will be available.
Ever More Nest, a new music project from New Orleans, plays on Sept. 8. Songwriter Kelcy Mae. Kelcy leads a band that has adopted a full-fledged Americana style that draws comparisons to Gregory Alan Isakov, Gillian Welch, and Nanci Griffith. Kelcy’s oft-lauded poeticism remains a calling card of her songs.
September 22’s guest, Early James, has been described as, “a combination of roots, rock, the lonesomeness of the blues and tongue, and the cheek of classic country.’’ His voice conjures a century’s worth of American barkers and crooners, from Alan Lomax field recordings to mid-century iconoclasts like Billy Holliday and Howlin Wolf to ghostly late-century interpreters like Fiona Apple and Tom Waits.
The Frank Brown Songwriters Showcase concludes the series on
September 29 and serves as a preview for the Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival scheduled Nov. 3-13 in venues from Gulf Shores to Pensacola. The night will kick off with Rhonda Hart and will be followed by Ira Dean and Anthony Smith.
Pictured: While living in Music City, Rhonda Hart formed an all girls group, Angels On The Range, with Deanna Carter and Mila Mason. She signed with Step One Records, for whom she recorded the smash hit, “Waiting For The Phone To Ring.” The song topped the European charts for several weeks. She and Carter later wrote the quadruple platinum, “Did I Shave My Legs For This,” which received two Grammy nominations.
She moved to Perdido Key at the invite of friend Bo Roberts during Mullet Toss – 2006. Bo was out of town at the time, but Rhonda liked it here and eventually built a huge local following as a solo artist and through collaborations with Justin Fobes, Smokey Otis, Elaine Petty, Cathy Pace and others.
