Satsuma teen saves swimmer

Jacob Ross, a strapping 19-year old from Satsuma, is a hero. At least to Rachel Callahan he is. Ross was at the beach near Perdido Pass with his girlfriend on a red flag day when he heard Callahan call for somebody to help a struggling swimmer she saw in the Gulf. Without a second thought, Ross (pictured) was in the roaring surf swimming out to rescue a woman caught in a riptide.
“Because of you, a family is not grieving the loss of their mother today on Mother’s Day,’’ Callahan wrote on facebook after the rescue. “I believe God put you there for a reason. You are very selfless, kind and respectful. You were so humble about the whole situation it touched my heart. Your parents should be very proud of the young man you are.’’
“I just jumped up, ran out there, and yelled help her,” Ross later told Daeshen Smith of FOX10 News. “I told her to grab onto me. She put her arms and legs around me. I had one arm free and the rest of my legs and I just swam around and swam us back to shore. She was coughing up water and everything. She had no words to say at all. She was just out of it. She was just sitting there crying almost with her head down trying to catch her breath.”
Ross said after about 25 minutes, the woman got up and was able to walk away. “That’s all that matters. It don’t make me feel any different. I mean people can praise me if they want to. But it’s just another day and I’m glad she’s alive.
